Our Children
We moved to Woodland Park area in 1982 from Dallas, Texas and lived for 17 years in the same home where we raised our three children. Gary established a small, but successful geotechnical engineering firm and Sandee worked off and on as an elementary teacher. We both still work full time jobs in our professions and dream of the day we can make a full time living in the resort business.
Our Ranch
We purchased a 160-acre ranch in a secluded part of northern Teller County in 1997. After years of searching, the ranch met all met all our criteria; surrounded by national forest; close to Woodland Park, year round live stream with some pasture, easy access with a county maintained road, and very quiet with no highways close by.
Our Home on the Range
Gary and our sons built a small home (the Wilderness
Cabin) of which we moved to in 2000. It was an enormous adjustment for all of us to move from a comfortable home in suburban Woodland Park to a 1300 square foot cabin in the middle of nowhere. The two years we lived in the Wilderness Cabin were spectacular. The star gazing in the hot tub and all of the wildlife visitors, gave us a new appreciation for Mother Nature. Gary once bugled a 6-point bull elk to within 25' of the back deck
Let's Build a Resort
In 2001 we started talking about doing some luxury vacation cabins due to the fact that almost everywhere in Colorado remote means a tent or very rustic. In May of 2002 we opened the Elk Ridge and Eagle Crest cabins. With only 3 months of advertising we were already booked 90% for the summer.
Summer 2002
The Hayman Fire hit in June of 2002 claiming both of the new cabins and luckily sparing our home (the Wilderness). We decided we would rebuild and reopened the Elk & Eagle Crest cabins in the spring of 2003. With an enormous amount help from friends, family, and the community, the ranch has been reclaimed and is now a mixture of grasslands and forest.
West Creek Lodge
Shortly after the Hayman Fire, we took advantage of some depressed real-estate prices to pick up another 80 acres and an 8000 square foot home adjacent to our ranch for a future guest lodge. The home has since been completely remodeled and opened as the West Creek Lodge in the summer of 2005. The lodge provides luxurious guest accommodations away from it all!
